EPRDF fields candidates endeavoring to build democracy, speed up dev’t
Addis Ababa - The Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) said, for the upcoming local and city council elections, it has fielded candidates, who play leading role in the efforts to build democracy and speed up development in the country. Election Committee Chairperson of the Front Redwan Hussein told journalists here Friday that EPRDF has been working to field nominees, who have public trust and respect.
Redwan said the candidates are believed to shoulder ongoing activities to speed up development and maintain good governance in the country. He said evaluation of the candidates is already finalized and their registration will be completed in the coming two days.
A joint council of political parties is formed in many regions including the Addis Ababa City, some zones, woredas and localities to hold the elections in peaceful and democratic manner, he said. Participation of women in the elections is given prime attention in all areas in particular in rural localities and woredas, Redwan said.
Addis Ababa, January 27 - Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn took over the post of African Union chairman on Sunday, replacing Benin’s President Thomas Boni Yayi in the one-year post.
“It is with a great sense of honor and humility that I accept the chairperson of our union,” PM Hailemariam told leaders at the AU summit meeting.
“I wish to express my heartfelt thanks for the opportunity to serve this half-a-century-old organization for the next one year.”
Yayi, the outgoing AU chair, hugged Hailemariam and said he will “succeed brilliantly in his mission in pushing us forward in our agenda for unity, peace, stability and development of our continent”.
Addis Ababa, January 27- Foreign Affairs Minister, Dr. Tedros Adhanom, held talks yesterday with his Egyptian counterpart Mohammed Amr at the sidelines of the AU meeting.
The two sides discussed on the bilateral relations of the two countries. Mohaamed Amr on the occasion noted the importance of strengthening people to people ties of the two countries to further bolster their diplomatic ties. Dr. Tedros on his part said Ethiopia will send a public diplomacy team in very short time to Cairo.
The two side also discussed on Egypt’s proposal of celebrating the 85th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Cairo and Addis Ababa. The two sides also exchanged views on regional issues. (MoFA)
